Treebase - The Global Tree Database

About This Project:

The goal of treebase is to create the world's largest, most complete and most useful database of trees.

We don't just mean tree species. We mean individual trees!

Each tree will have its own page; with exact coordinates, species, age, photos and other information.

According to recent estimates there are approximately 3,040,000,000,000 trees in the world:

The world has an estimated 60,065 tree species - according to Botanical Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), who compiled the tree species list.

Phase 1:

We will create the structure of the database and input the world's most famous trees, together with their location and other interesting / useful information.

Phase 2:

Satellite mapping will enable us to detect and upload trees by coordinates.

Phase 3:

Like wikipedia pages, people will be able to contribute photos, report changes to the tree and help create a "window through time", observing the tree's life cycle and creating a long-term record for the benefit of future generations.

Our free Treebase App will enable anyone to take a photo of a tree and have it instantly recognize the tree from coordinate mapping and add the image to the record of the tree; or, if the tree has not been entered into the record yet, it will enable it to generate a new page for that tree.

If you are planting a tree you will be able to enter a record in the treebase global tree database for your tree, recording its exact position, date of planting and enabling its life story to be recorded for future benefit.

Benefits:

Data analysis will enable us to increase our knowledge about trees - charting their populations, growth and movement of species through time, providing timelines and photographic records, and possibly have value to planning departments, conservation and ecological awareness. This site aims to be the bridge between the "internet of things" and the world of trees.
